The Pittsburgh Panthers and Colorado Buffaloes face off in 8-9 action from Orlando Thursday at 1:40PM on TBS.
Pitt sits at 25-9 on the year and enter the tournament after falling to UVA in a solid game on Saturday at the acc tournament. The Panthers started off the season strong, rushing out to a 16-1 record with their lone loss coming at the buzzer to top 10 Cincinnati. The Panthers would go on to come back to earth as the season wore on but still are a dangerous team that prides itself on hard nosed defense and are strong in the 1-5 slots. The Panthers are led by Lamar Patterson -- the senior forward averages 17.6 points per games, 4.8 boards and just over 4 assists -- all good for the top 2 in each category on the team. The Panthers also feature a solid post presence in big man Talib Zanna who can block shots and dominate the glass at times. Pitt will look to slow their opponents down and wear them down defensively as the game rolls on.

Colorado was a bubble team and squeaked into the tourney despite an underwhelming showing in a loss to Arizona in the conference tournament where the Buffs only scored 43 points and lost by 20. Colorado features a young roster and they are led by the guard play of Spencer Dinwiddie -- the Woodland Hills, CA native averages 14.7 points per game, 3 boards and nearly 4 assists per contest. Sophomore Josh Scott anchors the post and had a breakout season, averaging 14.8 points per game and 8.1 boards. The Buffalos certainly have the talent to make some noise in the dance but they will need to avoid the long scoring droughts that have doomed them at times this year.
This game should be close throughout as Pitt’s style of play does not usually promote blowouts. With that said, I like the Panthers size, physical nature and experience to be the difference. Look for a big contest from Lamar Patterson who goes for 20+ and 5+ boards as the Panthers get the late cover and win and move on to Saturday action.
