The #10 Arizona Sun Devils take the floor with the #7 Texas Longhorns in Thursday's NCAA first round.
After being eliminated 79-58 in the first round of the PAC 12 playoffs by Stanford, Arizona State received an At-Large bid to the Big Dance. The Sun Devils were struggling a bit towards season's end with three straight losses and defeats in five of seven to finish in a 6th place tie in the conference. ASU and their solid scoring combined with a #52 strength of schedule and 21 wins punched their ticket but their late struggles hurt their seeding. The Sun Devils outscored opponents 75-69 but gave up at least 78 points in four their year end defeats. Assuming the defense continues to have issues then Jahii Carson (18.6 ppg) and Jermaine Marshall (15 ppg) have to score.

Texas finished 4th in the Big 12 and were bumped from the postseason in round two in an 86-69 loss to a peaking Baylor squad. The Longhorns were not at their best to end the year with a 3-5 mark but 23 victories and a number 50 SOS was more then enough for a #7 seed in the NCAA's. Texas liked to get up and down the floor and outscore teams 74-70 but defended he shot at 39%. The offense has to get back in sync because points haven't been consistent the last several weeks which makes life difficult for the defensive end of the floor who sees a ton of shots coming their way. Four double digit scorers led by Isaiah Taylor and Jonathan Holmes combine for over 25.5 points and have to produce to kick start the attack.
Neither team was setting the world on fire at year's end but I don't see a ton of difference here and apparently neither do the oddsmakers with the small spread so I'll take a shot with Texas...
