The New Mexico State Aggies play the San Diego State Aztecs in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday night.
San Diego State finished 29-4 at the end of the regular season. San Diego State is making its fifth straight appearance in the NCAA tournament and is hoping to avoid another early exit. The Aztecs finished second in the nation in scoring defense, limiting opponents to an average of 56.6 points, and are hoping to carry that over into the NCAA tournament after getting run over in an 81-71 second-round loss to Florida Gulf Coast in last season’s tournament. The Aztecs have enjoyed plenty of regular-season success under Fisher but only once advanced out of the first weekend of the NCAA tournament, suffering a Sweet Sixteen loss to Connecticut in 2011. San Diego State has not allowed an opponent to reach 70 points since Jan. 12 but did not have quite enough offensively to sneak past New Mexico in a 64-58 loss in the Mountain West championship game.

New Mexico State finished the regular season with a 26-9 record overall. The Aggies should have a comprehensive scouting report on San Diego State thanks to coach Marvin Menzies, who served as an assistant on the Aztecs staff under Steve Fisher from 1999-2003. The Aggies thrive on the offensive end and enter the tournament riding a five-game winning after a 77-55 demolition of Idaho in the WAC tournament championship game. New Mexico State is making its third straight appearance in the NCAA tournament. The Aggies have been bounced in the first round of the tournament in each of the last two seasons and managed only 44 points in a loss to Saint Louis in 2013. New Mexico State has not scored fewer than 61 points in any of its last 23 games and was only once held under 60 this season, a 74-48 setback at No. 1 seed Arizona in December. The Aggies run the offense through junior guard Daniel Mullings, who leads the team in scoring at 16.8 points and scored 18 in the WAC championship game.
San Diego State is a great team with a great coach in Steve Fisher, but this will be a tough matchup for them in 2nd round of the tournament. New Mexico State matches up well against the Aztecs and I think they will keep this game close throughout. I’m taking the Aggies to cover the spread and possibly win outright.
