The Louisiana-Lafayette Rajun Cajuns battle the Creighton Bluejays in 3-14 action Friday from San Antonio at 3:10PM on TruTV.
Louisiana-Lafayette was one of the late surprise adds to the dance as they rallied to upend favorite Georgia State in the Sun Belt final 82-81 in overtime Sunday. ULL trailed the entire contest before rallying from 6 down with 2 minutes left to get the win. The Rajum Cajuns feature an elite scorer in Elfrid Payton. Payton averages 19 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists for ULL. Down low, things run through versatile big man Shawn Long who averages 18 and 10. Creighton will need to find a way to contain these two if they want to get out of the first round comfortably.
Creighton fell out of two seed territory with a narrow loss to Providence in the big east title game Saturday night. The Bluejays finished conference play 14-4 and scored 80+ through two conference tourney games but hit a cold streak in the finals. The Bluejays are led by arguably the best player in the nation in Doug McDermott. McDermott averages over 26 points per game and is a beast on the boards as well. The Bluejays rank 2nd in the country in both assists and FG% and could easily be argued for as the most efficient team in the nation when clicking.
This game should be interesting as Shawn Long should be able to dominate In the post but the Bluejays have a strong edge from deep. I like this game to come down to the wire and late heroics by McDermott to be the difference as Creighton advances but the Rajun Cajuns get the cover in front of a strong contingent of ULL fans in San Antonio.
