The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks battle the UCLA Bruins Sunday evening at 7:10PM on TBS.
Stephen F. Austin won their 29th game in a row in dramatic fashion Friday night as they erased a double digit VCU lead, amidst a full court press attack by the Rams to force overtime and steal the win in the extra session. Desmond Hayman finished with 17 points, but none bigger than a 3 while being fouled with 3 second left that resulted in a four point play and OT. Hayman hit another bomb in the extra session that put the Lumberjacks up for good. Jacob Parker had 22 and 4 and guard Thomas Walkup had 12 points, 10 boards and 4 assists. The Lumberjacks were a bit sloppy with the ball against VCU’s press, finishing with 17 turnovers but SFA will likely not see another D like the Rams the rest of the way. Stephen F. Austin now sits at 32-2 on the year.
UCLA advanced to the round of 32 with a late Friday win over Tulsa out west in San Diego. The Bruins led the entire contest and put things out of reach with an early second half run that ultimately led to a 17 point victory. The Bruins continue to get well distributed contribution and against Tulsa, they were led by Jordan Adams 21 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Norman Powell added 16 and Kyle Anderson was his usual productive self with 8 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals to pace the Bruins. UCLA racked up 11 steals and had 17 team assists to just 10 turnovers. The Bruins were also impressive at the stripe, finishing 13-15 from the line.
The Lumberjacks are riding high and should certainly be taken for real at this stage. UCLA is more athletic, but the Lumberjacks have shown that their efficient brand of basketball is very effective, no matter the opponent. I like this one to be a wire to wire affair and the quick guards of Stephen F. Austin will prove to be the difference as the Lumberjacks officially take the reigns as this year’s cinderella with the cover and the berth in the sweet 16.
