The Murray State Racers host the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks in CIT second round action on Monday.
On paper Nebraska-Omaha seemed like an unlikely choice to advance in the CIT as they dropped five of six to end 2013-14 on a down note but facing North Dakota of the Big Sky fixed that. The Mavericks crushed the Fighting Sioux 91-75 in a game that really wasn't close. The Mavericks burned the nets with 55% shooting and owned a 22-10 edge at the line over the 41% shooting Sioux. John Karhoff led a balanced attack with a contest best 17 points with Mike Rostampour adding 16 points and a monster 21 rebounds. CJ Carter tossed in 14 while Alex Phillips and Marcus Tyus netted 13 points each with Tyus snaring five pulls.

Murray State's NCAA dreams went down the tubes in a three point loss to Easter Kentucky who also beat Belmont to go Dancing so there is no shame in that. To their credit the Racers did not sit and sulk but instead went to Missouri State and handed the Bears a 66-63 defeat and punched their ticket to the next round of the CIT. The boxscore was fairly even throughout with both squads connecting at around 41% from the field with the Racers holding a decisive 13-8 advantage in free throws. Jarvis Williams was the star of the game with a game high 20 points and ten rebounds with Cameron Payne right on his heels with 19 points and five yanks followed by a ten point, right board effort from Jeffery Moss.
Murray State wasn't that far away from representing the Ohio Valley in the Big Dance but one reason they are not is defense which is definitely a concern here. I'll back them here simply on being home and they are the better squad...
