The San Diego State Aztecs and the Arizona Wildcats face off on Thursday in Anaheim for a West Region Sweet 16 matchup in the NCAA Tournament with the winner going to the Elite Eight.
The San Diego State Aztecs have lost just fur times all season long and have been ranked all season as well yet they still seem to get little respect. SDSU knocked off New Mexico State in their NCAA Tournament opener and followed it up by dominating upstart North Dakota State by 19 points. Xavier Thames leads the Aztecs averaging 17.3 points per game. Winston Shepard is averaging 11.7 points, J.J. O’Brien is averaging 7.9 points, and Josh Davis is averaging 7.8 points and 9.9 rebounds. San Diego State is averaging 70.5 points and they are shooting 43.6 percent while defensively they are allowing 56.6 points and their opponents shoot just 38.3 percent. San Diego State won the Mountain West and with just two teams from the MWC making to March Madness they are the lone team from the conference standing. SSU went 3-3 against teams ranked in the top 25 including a nine-point loss to Arizona back in November.
The Arizona Wildcats were the top ranked teams in the nation for a good portion of the season and for the most part have played like a top ranked team. Arizona opened up their 2014 NCAA Tournament by beating a feisty Weber State team by nine points and then crushed Gonzaga by 23 points. Nick Johnson is the leader of the Wildcats averaging 16.3 points per game. Aaron Gordon is averaging 12.4 points and 7.8 rebounds, Kaleb Tarczewski is averaging 10 points and 6.5 rebounds, and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson is averaging 8.9 points and 5.7 rebounds. Arizona is averaging 73.2 points and they are shooting 47.1 percent while defensively they are allowing 58.3 points and their opponents shoot 38 percent. Arizona is 4-1 against teams ranked in the top 25 and 6-1 in neutral site games. Arizona is the number one seed in the West Regional.
San Diego State is 8-3 against the spread against the Pac-12, 5-2 against the spread following a win, and 6-2 against the spread in their last eight neutral site games. Arizona is 7-1 against the spread in their last eight NCAA Tournament games, 20-7 against the spread in their last 27 non-conference games, and 1-7 against the spread against the Mountain West Conference. The favorite has covered the point spread in five of the last seven meetings of these two.
The total is set at 120.5 but with these two that number is a tall order and I look for this one to stay under and that is my free pick.
I also have a pick on who will cover the spread and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
