The 11 seed Dayton Flyers and the 10 seed Stanford Cardinal meet in Memphis Thursday evening for South Region NCAA tournament action.
Dayton’s magical run continued into the sweet 16 as the Flyers upended another solid squad in the Syracuse Orange Saturday evening. Once again, the Flyers built a lead late and were on the defensive as their opponent had one last shot to win it that rimmed out. The 55-53 win marks the 12th in Dayton’s last 14 contests. Most contribution came from Dayton’s starters as Dyshawn Pierre led the way with 14 and 6 boards and Devin Oliver stuffed the stat sheet with 7 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Dayton won the battle on the boards and managed to knock down 7 threes -- including big ones as they exchanged baskets late. With two quality wins under their belt now, the Flyers are certainly legit contenders to move onto the elite 8.
Stanford enters sweet 16 play after upending Kansas Sunday afternoon 60-57. The Cardinals have been up and down this year but are peaking at just the right time. Stanford quickly erased a two point halftime deficit and the Jayhawks needed desperation threes late to even keep it close. The Cardinal were aided by the absence of Kansas big man, Joel Embid and they did a good job down low in turn with a rebounding advantage and 25 points from their post players. Dwight Powell added 7 boards and the Cardinal forced Kansas into 10 steals -- key in their second half run. A shocking statistic that they will need to avoid moving forward -- the Cardinal got the win despite a whopping 0-9 from the three point line.
These two teams are a big of an enigma -- the Flyers have been playing better overall of late, but the Cardinal play in the better league. I expect this contest to be a close one and is one of the toss up games looming this week. Look for the Flyers defense to be the difference here as Dayton gets another big, all-around game from Devin Oliver and the Flyers muscle their way to the elite 8 with the narrow win and cover.
