The Brigham Young Cougars look to make a statement when they open the year with the Long Beach State 49ers.
The Long Beach State 49ers might be the face of the Big West given their recent postseason appearances but given the present makeup of the team the 49ers will be hard pressed to make noise in the conference. The 49ers were 10-6 in league play a season ago but were only 15-17 overall and are picked to finish third or 4th by many experts. The issues for this team generally were at the defensive end of the floor where opponents averaged over 70 points which left no room for error with the offense scoring 69 points. Points won't be an issue this year either with Mike Caffey and Mike Lamb averaging 31 points with both being able to connect consistently from long range. AJ Spencer should be able to average more then ten points as well to give the team three DD scorers.

The West Coast Conference is Gonzaga and everybody else because they are loaded but if there is one team that could make the Bulldogs squirm it's Brigham Young. The Cougars are penciled in as second in the conference despite the loss of some very important contributors. Matt Calino takes almost 14 points to Marquette while 12 point scorer Eric Mika is away on a mission and that's significant because he was strong on the boards and gave BYU a scoring threat in the paint. However scoring shouldn't be a huge concern with the nation's 6th leading scorer and WCC POY in Tyler Haws bringing back 23 points. Guard Kyle Collingsworth is coming back from knee surgery and that's 14 points and eight boards with the ability to distribute the ball as well. If Nate Austin develops some scoring touch to go with his rebounding ability and a few big guys can contribute then BYU will score from anywhere.
LBSU are 11-3 ATS in their last 14 road games and 15-7 ATS in their last 22 vs. West Coastwhile the over is 23-11-1 in LBSU last 35 road games. For Brigham Young the under is 7-2 in BYU last 9 non-conference games while BYU is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 vs. Big West. Brigham Young should score points hers because Long Beach State doesn't have a rock solid defense, The only thing the 49ers can do is score and that's their only hope here because they can hang tough if the shots are falling but will get killed is they don't fall...
