The Indiana State Sycamores and IUPUI Jaguars play Friday night at the IUPUI Gymnasium.
The Indiana State Sycamores had an impressive 23-11 season last year and will need to fill many holes if they hope to duplicate that success. With several key players and a lot of experience gone, the Sycamores will turn to Justin Gant to lead the way. Gant has improved each season and bump his averages to 10.2 points and 42 percent shooting from deep last year. Without Jake Odum and Manny Arop on the court, Gant will have to really shine and have his best season yet. Khristian Smith is another playmaker for Indiana State, who shot an impressive 48.1 percent from the field and grabbed 4.3 rebounds. The Indiana State Sycamores aren’t nearly as talented or deep as they were last season, but with two key playmakers and a coach who preaches defense, they should still be a force in the MVC.
USA TODAY Sports
The IUPUI Jaguars have won a combined 12 games in their last two seasons, which forced a coaching change with the hire of Jason Gardner. To make matters worse, IUPUI loses its only two players to average double-digit points in Ian Chiles and Mitch Patton. Khufu Najee is the next guy up for the Jaguars, a senior guard who averaged nearly 10 points and two assists in more than 30 minutes of play. Najee will have to improve his shooting percentage of 4.33 and be more aggressive at both ends of the court. A bright spot for IUPUI is Marcellus Barksdale, who did a little bit of everything in his first real year of playing time and could post many double doules this season as one of the main guys. Overall, it’s going to take some time before the IUPUI Jaguars are competitive in the Summit League, but they have potential moving forward.
The Sycamores are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 road games and 1-8 ATS in their last 9 games overall. The Jaguars are 17-39 ATS in their last 56 home games and 14-41 ATS in their last 55 games overall.
Even with the Indiana State Sycamores kind of rebuilding, they're still light years ahead of the IUPUI Jaguars in terms of talent. I don't love laying this much chalk on the first game of the season but the Sycamores should get the job done.
