The Morehead State Eagles and UNLV Rebels play Friday night at the Thomas & Mack Center.
The Morehead State Eagles are going to seriously compete for the Ohio Valley title with a roster full of playmakers. Morehead State is led by one of the top players in the conference in Angelo Warner, who averaged 17.5 ppg last season on 44.6 percent shooting, and he gets to the rim with ease. Brent Arrington also returns for another season after averaging 11.8 points on 42 percent shooting. Last season, Morehead State shot a cool 45 percent from the field and averaged 76.8 points, and it’s safe to assume those numbers won’t fall off that much. The concerns for Morehead State come on the defensive end and the rebounding department. Yes, Morehead State was one of the top rebounding teams last season, but the loss of Chad Posthumus won’t be easy to replace.

This could be the season where the UNLV Rebels turn the corner and reach the NCAA tournament. Despite losing a ton of talent, including top scorers in Bryce Dejean-Jones and Khem Birch, UNLV landed some big name recruits who have NBA potential and will contribute right away. Rashad Vaughn and Dwayne Morgan have star quality, especially Vaughn who could play his way into the first round of the upcoming draft if he fulfills expectations. After a disappointing freshman season, Kendall Smith is still a quality player who could be in for a sweet bounce back year. The UNLV Rebels were a balanced team last season that made a case for postseason play. While a few of those key guys aren’t around, UNLV has more than enough young talent to make major noise in the MWC.
The Eagles are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Runnin' Rebels are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games and 8-0-1 ATS in their last 9 non-conference games.
This is one of the better games on Friday's card and should come down to the wire. Both UNLV and Morehead State have playmakers and a good enough team to make a run at the NCAA tournament. With that said, I'm taking the Morehead State Eagles and the points. The Eagles know how to get to the free throw line, which is usually a key in keeping a game close.
