The East Tennessee State Buccaneers and Valparaiso Crusaders meet Friday night at the Athletics-Recreation Center.
The East Tennessee State Buccaneers were one of the top offensive teams in the country last season, averaging 76.8 points per game and should stay in that ballpark this year. East Tennessee State returns its top scorer in Rashawn Rembert and second-leading scorer in Jalen Riley. Rembert and Riley combined for more than 20 points and five rebounds last season, and Rembert shot a cool 42.5 percent from downtown. The weakness this year for East Tennessee State will come in the paint after losing quality rebounders in Hunter Harris and Kinard Gadsden-Gilliard. The East Tennessee State Buccaneers were already a poor defensive team as it was, and now will have to find quality guys to load up in the paint. A.J. Merriweather has a chance to really shine this season after averaging 9.5 points and 6.3 rebounds as a freshman.
USA TODAY Sports
The Valparaiso Crusaders 9-7 conference record last season has fans feeling positive for things to come this year. Alec Peters proved that he has what it takes to lead Valparaiso after racking up 12.7 points and 4.8 rebounds as a freshman. Peters should do a nice job of becoming the go-to guy with LaVonte Dority no longer on the team. Keith Carter should also have a breakout season now that he has some stability after learning the ropes last season after transferring from St. Louis. The Valparaiso Crusaders were a very balanced team last season but their main issue this year will be the lack of scoring depth, as so much of the load was put onto a couple of players last season. Sophomore guard Lexus Williams could be the X-factor for the Crusaders this season.
The Buccaneers are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Crusaders are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 home games and 0-7 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
While both teams are heading in the right direction, getting this many points with a team that's capable of shooting lights out of the gym is too good to pass up. Give me the East Tennessee State Buccaneers and the points.
