The Fairfield Stags and Duke Blue Devils tip off Saturday at the TD Bank Sports Center.
The Fairfield Stags have nowhere to go but up after finishing last season with just seven wins and ranking 322nd in points scored. To make matters worse, Fairfield loses its top player and best scorer in Maurice Barrow. However, Fairfield is 1-0 on the season after winning Friday against Central Connecticut State. Marcus Gilbert will be the go-to guy for Fairfield this season, a 6’6” forward who shot a cool 36.7 percent from downtown. Along with crafty guard K.J. Rose, Gilbert will have to be aggressive at both ends of the court and help give the Stags some consistent offensive production. Amadou Sidibe should see an expanded role and has the potential to be a double-double type player if he can build on last season’s efforts. Until consistent scorers pop up, the Fairfield Stags will continue to rely on their above-average defense.

The Duke Blue Devils beat up the Presbyterian Blue Hose on Friday and now look to get off to a fast 2-0 start. Of course, retooling is the theme for Duke this season, as there’s no Jabari Parker or Rodney Hood to carry the way. Instead, Jahlil Okafor is the new guy on campus and he’s surrounded by old faces in Quinn Cook, Amile Jefferson and Rasheed Sulaimon. In Friday’s victory, Duke shot 60.9 percent from the field and turned the ball over only nine times. Okafor led the way with 19 points and six rebounds in his first college games, while Grayson Allen finished the job with 18 points off the bench. The Duke Blue Devils looked to be in midseason form with 16 threes, but of course the lack of competition doesn’t really tell us much this early in the season.
The Stags are 7-1-1 ATS in their last 9 road games and 0-6-1 ATS in their last 7 vs. Atlantic Coast. The Blue Devils are 1-5-1 ATS in their last 7 home games and 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 Saturday games.
You see the way Duke played last night? Yeah, I'll have some of that. Duke in another blowout against a team that doesn't have nearly enough talent to keep up.
