The Charlotte 49ers and Elon Phoenix square off Sunday at the Alumni Gym.
This is the season opener for the Charlotte 49ers, a team that hopes to improve off last year’s mediocre 17-14 record overall. There’s really no excuse for Charlotte not to make a run this season, as three of the 49ers top four scorers return, including their best overall player in Pierria Henry. Henry does a little bit of everything for Charlotte, averaging more than 12 points, five rebounds and five assists. Willie Clayton also has the ability to be a double-double machine after averaging 10.8 points and 8.9 rebounds last season as a sophomore. Terrence Williams is also an experienced guard who can create his own shot. The only issue I have with the Charlotte 49ers is a lack of outside shooting, especially with Ben Cherry and Denzel Ingram no longer on the team. Those were the 49ers top three-ball shooters, a team that shot 35.6 percent from deep last season.

The Elon Phoenix got off to a nice start with a 64-58 victory over the Florida Atlantic Owls, their first win as a member of the CAA. Elon is going to look a little different with a ton of players gone to graduation and little playmakers left on the team. Elon, a team that relied on the three-ball last season, shot just 25 percent from deep in the victory. Tony Sabato led the Phoenix with 14 points and Tanner Samson had 10 points and eight rebounds. One of the more encouraging signs for Elon was freshman Elijah Bryant scoring 10 points in just 19 minutes of play off the bench. Until consistent scorers begin to emerge, the Elon Phoenix will turn to their defense to win games, as they held the Owls to just 37.5 percent shooting and 16 turnovers.
The 49ers are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 road games and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall. The Phoenix are 4-14 ATS in their last 18 home games.
I expect a big season from the Charlotte 49ers considering pretty much their entire team from last year returns. Elon is a new team that will have trouble adjusting this early to this type of comp. Take the 49ers and the small chalk.
