The Mercer Bears and Seton Hall Pirates play Sunday afternoon at the Prudential Center.
The Mercer Bears beat up the Piedmont Lions in their first game, 88-48. Despite losing all five starters from last year’s tournament team, Mercer held Piedmont to just 29.4 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers. Mercer will be a team to keep an eye on if it can continue to play defense at that level. Offensively, Ike Nwamu led the charge as expected with 22 points on 7-12 shooting, while Jordan Strawberry scored 11 points off the bench. The X-Factor for Mercer this season will be the health of guard Jibri Bryan, who has been dealing with injury issues. Bryan played 28 minutes in the victory, producing three rebounds and eight points on seven shots. This was a nice confidence win for the rebuilding Mercer Bears, but this matchup will tell us a lot more about this team.
The Star-Ledger-USA TODAY Sports
This is the season opener for the Seton Hall Pirates, a team that finished last season with a 17-17 record. Seton Hall does lose its top player and leading scorer in Fuquan Edwin, but brings in some talented freshmen and returns Sterling Gibbs. Gibbs averaged 13.2 points and 4.2 assists last season, and should have little trouble being the top option in his junior year. The problem is that Gibbs is truly the only main contributor from last season that is still on this Seton Hall roster. The Pirates could use a bigger season from Brandon Mobley, but Seton Hall’s success is going to come down to freshmen Isaiah Whitehead and Angel Delgado. Both were highly recruited players and have the potential to see key minutes right away in hopes of becoming guys who can help carry the team. Delgado has star potential and is the X-Factor for the Pirates.
The Bears are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 road games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 Sunday games. The Pirates are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games and 9-20-1 ATS in their last 30 home games.
This is the season the Seton Hall Pirates can make some noise. Mercer is a young team that's still adjusting on the fly and will likely have issues with the youth and athleticism the Pirates have to offer. Give me Seton Hall and the chalk.
