The Hampton Pirates and Syracuse Orange clash Sunday afternoon at the Carrier Dome.
The Hampton Pirates were blown out in their season opener against the Iowa Hawkeyes, 90-56. Hampton, a team that played terrific defense last season, allowed the Hawkeyes to shoot 47.5 percent from the field and knockdown nine of 21 three attempts. Hampton’s defense was expected to take a step back without Du'Vaughn Maxwell on the team, but it can’t drop off that much if its going to compete in the MEAC. Offensively, Dwight Meikle led the way with 14 points on 11 shots, and Quinton Chievous had 12 points and nine rebounds. Brian Darden was the only other Hampton player who had more than six points. The Hampton Pirates need better performances from guys like Jervon Pressley and Deron Powers if they’re going to make a serious run at a conference title. Either way, these games will help prepare Hampton later in the season.

The Syracuse Orange weren’t really challenged by the Kennesaw State Owls, but a 89-42 win gets the young players feet wet. Of course, Syracuse wasted no time flexing its muscle defensively, holding Kennesaw State to 32.7 percent shooting and forcing 25 turnovers. If there’s one thing you can count on with Jim Boeheim, it’s great defensive effort. Offensively, Rakeem Christmas scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Tyler Roberson and Chris McCullough each had a double-double. B.J. Johnson scored 19 points off the bench and Syracuse snagged 30 more rebounds than the Owls. Better competition will tell us just how much Syracuse will miss guys like Tyler Ennis and Jerami Grant, but the Orange are clearly off to a healthy start.
The Pirates are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games and 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall. The Orange are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 non-conference games and 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
Syracuse plays a lot like Iowa with tough defense and the ability to hit open shots from beyond the arc. If Hampton couldn't hang with the Hawkeyes, I doubt the Pirates can even come close to hanging with the Orange in their mad house. Give me Syracuse in a blowout win.
