The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and UCLA Bruins play Sunday night at the Pauley Pavilion.
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers beat up the Trinity Baptist Eagles in their season opener, 79-36. While the level of competition wasn’t the best in the world, Coastal Carolina held the Eagles to 26 percent shooting and 14 first half points, numbers that are impressive regardless of who you play. The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers have had one of the top defenses in the Big South for quite some time and that’ll likely continue with a veteran squad on deck this season. Offensively, Josh Cameron scored 16 points off the bench, and Shivaughn Wiggins had 12 points and six rebounds. With the game pretty much in hand, Elijah Wilson was able to take it easy by just getting up six shots in 20 minutes, but you can expect a more aggressive game from the sophomore this time around.
USA TODAY Sports
The UCLA Bruins had an offensive explosion in their 113-78 opening win over the Montana State Bobcats. UCLA shot 57.4 percent from the field, had 25 assists on 39 made baskets and scored 50-plus points in both halfs. Despite losing a ton of talent to the NBA draft, UCLA still has more than enough talent to compete for a Pac-12 title. Kevon Looney and Norman Powell combined for 45 points, and Thomas Welsh scored 14 points in 13 minutes off the bench. Bryce Alford had 18 points and 12 assists in his first real start at the point guard. Poor competition or not, these are the type of performances you should expect from a UCLA Bruins squad that’s loaded with offensive playmakers who can shoot a high percentage.
The Chanticleers are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 road games and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Bruins are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 home games and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
While Coastal Carolina plays great defense, the Chanticleers have not faced the type of firepower they're going to see in this game. UCLA is really capable of shooting lights out of the gym and if that happens, the Bruins will cover with ease.
