The South Alabama Jaguars and Southern Miss Golden Eagles square off Monday night at the Reed Green Coliseum.
The South Alabama Jaguars beat up the Carroll College Montana Fighting Saints in their season opener but will obviously have a steeper challenge this time around. Still, South Alabama showed signs of weakness by allowing the Fighting Saints to shoot above 50 percent from the field. Offensively, South Alabama shot 45.3 percent from the field and grabbed 38 rebounds, which was 11 more than the Saints. John Brown led the Jaguars with 22 points on 6-14 shooting and Ken Williams had 18 points and three assists. JUCO transfer Tafari Whittingham scored seven points in 10 minutes off the bench and could be a much needed spark for this team. Overall, the South Alabama Jaguars aren’t expected to do much in an improved Sun Belt but will have a chance to prove people wrong here.

The Southern Miss Golden Eagles simply shot the lights out of the gym in their season opener against the William Carey Crusaders. Southern Miss shot 56 percent from the field, had 16 assists on 28 made baskets and scored 49 points in the second half to pull away. Defensively, Southern Miss allowed 38.1 percent shooting and forced 17 turnovers. Matt Bingaya and Shadell Millinghaus combined for 39 points, while Dallas Anglin scored 11 points off the bench in 19 minutes. Southern Miss has a nice mixture of experience and youth but has questions with its depth. The performance from freshman Bingaya is a great sign for the Golden Eagles if they’re going to make any noise in the C-USA this season. This game will give us a slightly better idea of who the Southern Miss Golden Eagles are before they take the road this week.
The Jaguars are 7-19 ATS in their last 26 road games and 5-14 ATS in their last 19 games overall. The Golden Eagles are 11-2-1 ATS in their last 14 home games and 15-7-2 ATS in their last 24 games overall. The Jaguars are 0-4 ATS in the last 4 meetings, while the road team is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
Southern Miss is a possible NCAA tournament team and showed just how explosive it can be in its first game. Meanwhile, South Alabama is a bottem feeder in a weak Sun Belt. There's only one side to take in this game and it's the Golden Eagles and the chalk.
