The Saint Louis Billikens and Indiana State Sycamores play Tuesday night at the Hulman Center.
The Saint Louis Billikens survived their opening game against the Southern Illinois Salukis, 62-59. Saint Louis shot 40.5 percent from the field and had 12 assists on 17 made baskets, while the defense allowed 39.6 percent shooting and forced 14 turnovers. Austin McBroom led the way with 24 points on 14 shots and Achraf Yacoubou had 12 points and seven rebounds. Mike Crawford chipped in 10 points off the bench and Milik Yarbrough grabbed five rebounds in 12 minutes. Nope, this is far from the Saint Louis Billikens team you’ve seen in past years with so much talent leaving, but their great defense is going to keep them in most games regardless. McBroom is questionable for this game with an arm injury.

The Indiana State Sycamores beat the IUPUI Jaguars in their season opener, 79-66. Indiana State shot 40 percent from the field and grabbed 42 rebounds, while the defense allowed 35 percent shooting and forced 16 turnovers. Khristian Smith led Indiana State with 27 points and nine rebounds, as Devonte Brown had 19 points and seven rebounds. Brenton Scott made his impact felt with 14 points and six rebounds off the bench, while Alex Etherington came away with three steals in 14 minutes. Indiana State once again has the potential to be that surprise team in the MVC with its ability to play lockdown defense and control the glass. The Indiana State Sycamores just need to develop a little more scoring depth if they’re truly going to compete with the big boys of this conference.
The Billikens are 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 non-conference games and 3-12-1 ATS in their last 16 games overall. The Sycamores are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 home games and 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
This is going to be a defensive blood bath and the first one to 40 points could be the winner. However, the Indiana State Sycamores have more experience and balance in place, while Saint Louis is still trying to recover after losing so much talent during the offseason. Give me the Sycamores in a toss-up game.
