The Richmond Spiders and Old Dominion Monarchs play Tuesday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
The Richmond Spiders began this season on the right foot with a 64-46 victory over the Radford Highlanders. Richmond shot 47.9 percent from the field and got to the free throw line 22 times, while the Spiders defense allowed 28.1 percent shooting and forced 14 turnovers. Kendall Anthony picked up where he left off last season with 18 points and two assists, while Terry Allen racked up 13 points and nine rebounds. T.J. Cline scored 11 points in 12 minutes off the bench and Alonzo Nelson-Ododa led Richmond with 11 rebounds. Last season was a disaster for the Richmond Spiders due to injuries and guys leaving the team, but the experience those players picked up will pay off greatly this year. Richmond is that sleeper team in a deep and talented Atlantic 10.
USA TODAY Sports
The Old Dominion Monarchs beat the UNC Wilmington Seahawks in their season opener, 76-56. Old Dominion shot 47.3 percent from the field and had 16 assists on 26 made baskets, while the defense allowed 32.1 percent shooting and forced 13 turnovers. Trey Freeman led the way with 23 points and four assists, and Jonathan Arledge had 19 points and nine rebounds. Denzell Taylor grabbed 12 rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench and Aaron Bacote was the third Monarch to score in the double digits. The Old Dominion Monarchs are expected to be a middle of the road team in a weak C-USA, but their performance opening night was quite impressive and could build confidence moving forward the rest of the way. Old Dominion may be worth keeping an eye on early in the season.
The Spiders are 8-17-2 ATS in their last 27 non-conference games and 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The Monarchs are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 home games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. Atlantic 10. The Spiders are 9-3 ATS in the last 12 meetings, while the favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
The Richmond Spiders are the better overall team and have the best overall player in Kendall Anthony. While the Monarchs are at home, I'm taking Richmond in a toss-up game.
