The St. Mary’s Gaels and the New Mexico State Aggies face off on early Tuesday morning with a 3 AM EST start as part of the 24 Hour of Basketball.
The St. Mary’s Gaels are once again looking to make some noise in the West Coast Conference and get back to the NCAA Tournament. St. Mary’s got their season started right winning by 10 points but their opponent was Division II Cal State-Los Angeles. Kerry Carter opened the season with a monster game scoring 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to lead the Gaels. Brad Waldow had 16 points and 10 rebounds, Emmet Naar had 12points and five assists, and Aaron Bright scored 10 points. St. Mary’s shot just 44.2 percent from the floor but they were 41.2 percent from beyond the three-point arc hitting 14 of 34 but they were also a miserable 17 of 32 from the free throw line. St. Mary’s has a solid group of talent but we just didn’t lean much about them in game one.
USA TODAY Sports
The New Mexico State Aggies should be competitive in the wide-open WAC but aside form this unenviable road spot they opened the season against powerhouse Wichita State. New Mexico State trailed WSU by 17 points at the half and that was the final margin as well. Daniel Mullings was the high scorer for NMSU scoring 14 points and grabbing six rebounds. Remi Barry had none points and Pascal Siakam had seven points and five rebounds but it was little help for the overmatched Aggies. It was a poor shooting performance all the way around for New Mexico State shooting 41 percent from the floor, 25 percent from beyond the three-point arc. New Mexico State is a better team than what they showed against Wichita State but I am not sure how much better.
St. Mary’s is 7-1 against the spread against the WAC, 1-4 against the spread in their last five non-conference games, and 2-12 against the spread New Mexico State is 4-0 against the spread in their last four non-conference games, 4-1 against the spread following a loss, and 9-4 against the spread in their last 13 road games.
I think NMSU was just over matched by Wichita State and they play betterhere but I still se St. Mary's getting the cover.
