The George Washington Colonials will travel to John Paul Jones Arena to take on the Virginia Cavaliers this Friday night.
The George Washington Colonials have had a nice start of the season as they enter this contest 2-0 with dominant wins over both Grambling State and Rutgers. The Colonials have been getting it done on the offensive side of the ball as currently they are averaging 81.0 ppg on 48% shooting, grabbing 47.0 rpg and dishing out 15 apg which puts them in the top-100 in the country in each category. The backcourt led the way for the Colonials in their 70-53 win against Rutgers as Kethan Savage had 18 pts, 11 reb, and 4 ast while Joe McDonald added 15 pts, 9 reb, 4 ast, and 3 stl. George Washington surprised many people in the Atlantic-10 last year as they finished with 11 conference wins on route to finishing their season 24-9. Along with Savage and McDonald, Coach Joe McDonald returns two other juniors from last year’s squad in Patricio Garino (15.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg) and Kevin Larsen (11.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg). Coach McDonald has an experienced squad that can get it down on both ends of the court and if he can find some depth on his bench to help provide a break for his talented starting-five, the Colonials should once again should be near the top of the Atlantic-10.

The Virginia Cavaliers come into this match-up 3-0 on this season, ranked 9th in the country. The Cavaliers used a big first-half to beat the South Carolina State Bulldogs 75-55 this past Tuesday night. Leading the way for Virginia was their leader point-guard Malcolm Brogdon who scored 17 points (7-11 FG), 4 reb, 3 ast, Justin Anderson who also poured in 17 points (3-6 from 3-point range), 5 rebounds, and Anthony Gill who almost had a double-double with 11 points, 8 reb. The Cavaliers are once again on of the top defensive teams in the country early on this season, as they are holding their opponents to 48.3 ppg on just 28.4% shooting. Coach Tony Bennett has to be encouraged with the solid start of the season, however, he knows his squad will need to stay determined as tougher competition will be on the horizon soon. As the season rolls on, Virginia will need to continue to find ways to put the ball in the basket as although they are averaging a solid 73.7 points on nearly 50% shooting so far this season, this was a team that had some trouble scoring against tougher competition last year, as Virginia ranked just 282nd in the country last year at 66.2 ppg.
The Colonials are 13-5 ATS in their last non-conference games however, just 10-25 ATS in their last 35 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. The Cavaliers are 12-3-1 ATS in their last 16 home games and 19-6-2 ATS in their last 27 games overall.
The Virginia Cavaliers have started off the season as everyone expected rolling through some weaker competition. Although I’m a big fan of the Cavalier’s defensive and that John Paul Jones arena is a tough place to play, I think that George Washington is a very underrated and experienced team that will keep this game closer than expected. I’m going to roll with the Colonials and the points in this one.
