The Florida State Seminoles and Providence Friars play Saturday afternoon at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
The Florida State Seminoles had to have been looking ahead to this matchup after losing to Northeastern and dropping to 1-1 on the season. Overall, Florida State is averaging 77 points on 54.9 percent shooting and is allowing 71 points on 40.4 percent shooting. Aaron Thomas leads FSU with 19 points on 57.1 percent shooting and Montay Brandon is averaging 14 points and six rebounds. Kiel Turpin is the third Seminole to average double-digit points and Devon Bookert leads the team with 5.5 assists. The Florida State Seminoles have the talent to be a surprise team but the constant turnovers (averaging 17 per game) will continue to prevent this team from taking that next step. This trip up north could either make or break Florida State this early in the season.
USA TODAY Sports
The Providence Friars aren’t missing a beat without Bryce Cotton, as they’re 3-0 on the season. Providence is averaging 72.7 points on 45.7 percent shooting and is allowing 52 points on 39.7 percent shooting. LaDontae Henton leads Providence with 18.3 points on 48.8 percent shooting and Tyler Harris is averaging 15 points and 6.3 rebounds. Kris Dunn leads the Friars with 7.7 assists and Ben Bentil is shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc. The Providence Friars showed last season that they share the ball well and can score with the best of them, but a defense that’s ranked 28th in the country in points allowed has really been the difference maker for this team. If Providence can continue to play at this level, there’s no reason why it can’t compete for a Big East title.
The Seminoles are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 neutral site games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss. The Friars are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 2-6 ATS in their last 8 non-conference games.
While Providence is playing well out the gate, FSU should be hungry to rebound after such a questionable and poor loss. I'll take an angry and talented Seminoles squad and the small chalk.
