The Appalachian State Mountaineers and Virginia Tech Hokies play Saturday afternoon at the Cassell Coliseum.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers drop to 0-2 with losses to Ohio and Furman, and will now play their third straight road game. On the season, Appalachian State is averaging 56 points on 36 percent shooting and is allowing 78.5 points on 50.9 percent shooting. Tommy Spagnolo leads the way with 13 points and 9.5 rebounds while Frank Eaves is averaging 13 points on 25 percent shooting. Chris Burgess is the third Mountaineers’ player averaging double-digit points and Rantavious Gilbert has three blocks in just 21 minutes of playing time. The Appalachian State Mountaineers are shorthanded with injuries and suspensions, especially with senior guard Tab Hamilton not on the court. With that being the case, the Mountaineers will continue to struggle at both ends of the court.
USA TODAY Sports
The Virginia Tech Hokies are 2-0 with a win over Maryland-Eastern Shore and Liberty. On the season, Virginia Tech is averaging 72 points on 56.3 percent shooting and is allowing 54.5 points on 35.9 percent shooting. Justin Bibbs leads Virginia Tech with 12.5 points on 58.8 percent shooting and Joey Van Zegeren has 10.5 points and seven rebounds. Malik Muller is the Hokies second-leading scorer with 12 points and Devin Wilson leads the team with 7.5 assists. The Virginia Tech Hokies were expected to be one of the worst teams in the ACC this season but it’s hard seeing that as long as they continue to shoot 48.1 percent from downtown. Of course, the lousy 57.9 percent shooting from the free throw line must improve by the time conference play rolls around.
The Mountaineers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 road games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. loss. The Hokies are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 home games and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record.
It's hard not to pick the Virginia Tech Hokies with the way they've been playing. The Moutaineers are without their top player and are struggling at both ends of the court. Give me the Hokies and the chalk.
