The Charlotte 49ers and the Miami Hurricanes face off on Sunday in the Championship Game of the Charleston Classic college basketball tournament.
The Charlotte 49ers trailed South Carolina in their semi-final matchup on Friday but they rallied and got the win to advance to this game. It hasn’t been easy for Charlotte as it took overtime to beat Penn State in their tournament opener before beating the Gamecocks. Charlotte is averaging 81.3 points and they are shooting 47.6 percent from the floor and 43.1 percent from beyond the three-point arc while defensively they are allowing 73.3points and their opponents are shooting 37.7 percent. Braxton Ogbueze is averaging 17.3 points, Mike Thome Jr. is averaging 13.7 points and 11 rebounds, and Pierria Henry is averaging 10.7 points and 6.3 rebounds. Charlotte is flying under the radar but we saw them show early flashes last season as well.

The Miami Hurricanes look to be one of the early surprises this season in college basketball as they are showing their win over Florida wasn’t a fluke and they have been impressive in their first two games in this tournament. Miami beat Drexel by 20 to open this tournament and then crushed Akron by 28 points on Friday. Miami is averaging 74.5 points and they are shooting 49.3 percent including 46.8 percent from beyond the three-point arc while defensively they are allowing 53.2 points and their opponents shoot 35.7 percent. Angel Rodriguez leads Miami averaging 17.5 points and 4.8 assists, Sheldon McClellan is averaging 12.5 points and 5.5 rebounds, and Manu Lecomte is averaging 11.5 points. Miami looks like they are going to be a handful this season.
Charlotte is 5-1 against the spread in their last six games, 8-3-1 against the spread in their last 12 non-conference games, and 0-5 against the spread against the ACC. Miami is 5-2-1 against the spread in their last eight games, 4-1-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 4-9-1 against the spread following a game that they covered the point spread. Miami has covered the spread in their last four games against Charlotte.
Miami seems to have Charlotte’s number over the years and this year they have the better team as well.
