The South Carolina Gamecocks opened their tournament with a blowout win over Cornell but hen they blew a big lead on Friday to lose to Charlotte. South Carolina is 2-2 this season with their other loss coming at home to Baylor. South Carolina is averaging 69.5 points and they are shooting 43 percent from the floor while defensively they are allowing 58.8 points and their opponents are shooting 37.1 percent. Sindarius Thornwell is averaging 14 points and 4.8 rebounds, Tyrone Johnson is averaging 10 points, and Michael Carrera is averaging 8.5 points. The expectations are higher for South Carolina this season but they look like a team that is still trying to take a step up to the next level but not there yet.
USA TODAY Sports
The Akron Zips have lost their best player, Demetrius Treadwell, but that didn’t stop them from getting a first round win over USC. Akron was overmatched in round two as they simply couldn’t stop Miami who was hitting everything. Akron is averaging 63.7 points and hey are shooting 39.9 percent while defensively they are allowing 60.7 points and their opponents shoot 43.2 percent. Pat Forsythe leads Akron averaging 10.7 points and 5.3 rebounds, Noah Robotham is averaging 10.7 points, and Kwan Cheatam Jr. is averaging 9.3 points and 4.7 rebounds. How Akron carries on without Treadwell will remain to be seen.
South Carolina is 3-0-1 against the spread against the MAC, 4-1 against the spread following a game hat they didn’t cover the spread, and 9-4 against the spread in their last 13 neutral site games. Akron is 4-12 against the spread in their last 13 games, 2-8 against the spread in their last 10 games following a game that they didn’t cover the spread, and 1-6 against the spread in their last seven non-conference games.
South Carolina is getting way too much respect here and I see Akron winning outright.
