Western Carolina notched their first win of the season with a 72-53 victory against the Hiwassee College Tigers this past Friday night after opening the season with two losses against SEC in Mississippi State and Alabama. In their recent victory, James Sinclair had a monster game putting up 25 points and 9 rebounds, while guards Mike Brown and Rhett Harrelson added 12 points each. Western Carolina and Head Coach Larry Hunter lost All-Southern League Guard Trey Sumler (17.4 ppg, 4.3 apg) from last year’s team and will be heavily relying on James Sinclair to be the leader of the Catamounts this season. So far this season, Sinclair is averaging a whopping 25.3 points while shooting an impressive 56.5% from the field. Rhett Harrelson also has begun the season strong averaging 13 points per game while dishing out 4 assists per game. The Catamounts will need to start getting it done on the glass a bit better, as currently they are averaging just 31.3 rebounds per game.
The Oakland Golden Grizzlies are still searching for their first win of the season as they recently dropped to 0-3 after an 82-71 loss to Western Michigan Broncos at home this past Wednesday. Oakland has had a tough schedule to start the season, however, it doesn’t excuse the defensive effort they’ve displayed in their first three games. Currently, the Golden Grizzles are almost last in the nation in points allowed per game at 88.0 (ranked 346th) and certainly haven’t shown much of a presence in the paint as they only pull down 31.3 rebounds per game (ranked 289th) and have 0.7 blocks per game (ranked 347th). The good news for Head Coach Greg Kampe and the Golden Grizzlies is that although they don’t know how to stop the ball on the defensive side, they certainly have the ability to put the ball in the basket. Oakland is led by their Senior Forward Corey Petros who is averaging 14.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game and Kahlil Felder who is averaging 17.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 9.0 assists per game. Junior Forward Tommie McCune has also had a nice start of the season as he is averaging 18.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
USA TODAY Sports
The Catamounts are 4-1 in both their last 5 non-conference and road games. The Golden Grizzlies are 6-13 ATS in their last 19 non-conference games and 4-12-1 in their last 17 games overall.
The Catamounts have a great player in James Sinclair and although I think that he could have a very big night against the Golden Grizzlies defense, I feel that Oakland has had plenty of time to prepare for the Catamounts and will want to give the home-crowd a solid victory in the first of three matchups they’ll have at home over the next three days in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic. I’m going to pick Oakland to cover the spread in this one.
