The Toledo Rockets will face off against the Cleveland State Vikings at the Wolstein Center this Wednesday night.
The Toledo Rockets had high expectations coming into this season, but have struggled to a 2-4 record after their recent 81-79 loss against the Oakland Golden Grizzlies this past Saturday. In their loss against Oakland, the Rockets allowed the Golden Grizzlies to shoot 55.1% from the field and struggled on from long-range as they were only able to hit 5-21 (23.8%) of their three pointers. Leading the way for Toledo was Jonathan Williams who had 19 points (4-7 3PM-A) and Justin Drummond who added 16 points and 7 rebounds. On the season, the Rockers have been led by Julius Brown (15.0 ppg, 4.7 apg, Justin Drummond (12.8 ppg, 4.3 rpg), and J.D. Weatherspoon (12.0 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 1.5 apg). Toledo is getting the job done on the offensive end as they are currently averaging 77.8 ppg (ranked 45th) on 46.6 FG% (ranked 80th), however, they are really struggling on the defensive end as they are giving up 75.2 ppg (ranked 316th) on 44.1 FG% (ranked 244th).

Cleveland State enters the contest 3-3 on the season after defeating the Marshall Thundering Herd 68-59 this past Friday. The Vikings forced Marshall to make 17 turnovers and was able to take a commanding 33-22 lead at halftime which the Thundering Herd couldn’t overcome. Leading the way for the Vikings was center Marlin Mason who had 18 points on 7-11 shooting and 2 rebounds. Also chipping in for Cleveland State were their two leaders, Anton Grady who had 17 points, 4 rebounds and Trey Lewis who added 14 points, 4 reb, and 7 assists. Cleveland State has really turned it up on the defensive end in their last two games as they’ve held the Louisville Cardinals and Marshall Thundering Herd to a combined 104 points. The Vikings are one of the best teams in the country at taking away the basketball as they are averaging 9.7 steals per game which ranked 15th in the country. Cleveland State has a great starting five, especially in Lewis and Grady, however, the team doesn’t have much depth is the current starting five are all averaging at least 25.3 minutes per game. The Vikings will look to improve on the offensive side of the ball as they currently are averaging just 67.0 ppg (ranked 202nd) on 41.9% shooting (224th).
The Rockers are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games following an ATS loss, however, just 2-5-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall. The Vikings are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 non-conference games and 21-8-1 ATS in their last 30 games overall.
Cleveland State has a great starting five and one of the best duos in the Horizon League in Trey Lewis and Anton Grady. Although Toledo has struggled in recent games, this is a talented team that will put it together by the time conference play begins. Even though I’m a big fan of Lewis and Grady, I can’t pass up Toledo getting points in this match-up. I’m going roll with Toledo and the points in this one.
