The Canisius Golden Griffins travel to the Gallagher Center to face the Niagara Purple Eagles.
The Canisius Golden Griffins are not the offensive threat they were a season ago but it's hard to argue that the defense is far better. The Golden Griffins continued to struggle at the offensive end in a 60-57 victory at Saint Peter's but defense came to the rescue. to snap a three game slide. To put things in perspective the Peacocks did hit at 49% from the floor but did give the ball away 13 times in a slow half court type contest. On the flip side the Golden Griffins sank shots a 45% and had six more looks with just eight giveaways. Phil Valenti tossed in a game high 14 points and grabbed five boards followed by a 12 point, five yank performance by Zach Lewis. Josiah Heath chipped in with ten points and seven pulls while six others scored between 3-5 points.
It wasn't that many years ago that the Niagara Purple Eagles were one of the top teams in the MAAC but not over the past few years. Scoring appears to be a major concern this season and their defense won't win all by their lonesome. That was the case in a 70-57 loss at St John's on Tuesday for defeat number three in a row. An eleven point first half hole was too deep to dig out of especially with the Red Storm making shots at a 49% pace while Niagara was connecting at only 30%. The Purple Eagles poor marksmanship negeated 17 more looks at the basket. Emilie Blackmon pumped in a contest best 21 points but was just 9-21 fro the field with Ramone Snowden adding 13 points and 12 rebounds on 4-11. Nobody on the team approached 50% shooting with nine players taking shots.
The Golden Griffins are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a S.U. win while going 6-0 ATS in their last 6 vs. Metro Atlantic Athletic. Canisius are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record and are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400. Not a game that has an obvious edge which makes it extremely difficult to figure out. I believe Canisius has the advantage but not enough to where I'm betting the house...
