The Southern Illinois Salukis and SIU Arena welcome the Missouri State Bears to town in the conference opener.
The Missouri State Bears non conference schedule has been a mixed bag at 6-6 and they really can not afford a slow start in league action. The Bears are hoping to build on a 52-45 victory versus visiting Oral Roberts befor the holiday break which ended their three game slide. The Golden Eagles led by ten at the half before the Bears defense came to life in a 31-14 second half run. Missouri State held Oral Roberts to 32% and countered with 36% for for a few additional baskets in an even game overall. Marcus Marshall tossed in a contest best 16 points and posted five yanks while Loomis Gerring scored ten points with Christian Kirk chipping in with nine points.

The key to success for the Southern Illinois Salukis is controlling the pace and hitting some shots in the halfcourt while avoiding shootouts. They could do neither in a 83-71 loss to visiting Murray State before the Christmas break and the Racers had too much firepower to deal with. The Racers hit at over 55% from the field and the Salukis 42% simply wasn't enough to stay close on the scoreboard. Anthony Beane Jr. paced Southern Illinois with 19 points but was only 6-17 from the floor. Jordan Caroline tossed in 16 points and hauled in a game high 13 rebounds while Jalen Pendleton scored another 13 points. Four others scored between 5-6 points but the top three couldn't carry the entire offensive load.
The Bears are 27-13 ATS in their last 40 vs. Missouri Valley and are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600. Missouri State are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 road games vs. a team with a winning home record and 3-10 ATS in their last 13 games overall. The Salukis are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 vs. Missouri Valley and 14-6 ATS in their last 20 games overall while going 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games following a double-digit loss at home. Southern Illinois can be tough at home and I have yet to figure out Missouri State so I'm cautiously taking the points...
