The Houston Cougars travel to the Reynolds Center to battle the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in CUSA action.
The Houston Cougars are needing to get off to a quick start in the AAC as they don't want to fall too far off the pace in a top heavy conference. The Cougars look like a score first squad which turned out to be a problem when they visited defensive minded Memphis Wednesday. The Cougars trailed by two at the half before the Tigers ended the upset bid with a 36-18 run over the final 20 minutes. UH gave the ball away 16 times and sank 30% of their looks while Memphis checked in at 49% for eleven more field goals. Devonta Pollard paced the Houston offense with 17 points and seven rebounds on 6-18 from the field with Jherrod Stiggers and Danrad Knowles contributed eleven and eight points respectively.
The Tulsa Golden Hurricane are one of a few teams with an air of mystery surrounding them as they are a veteran squad in a new conference and nobody knows where they stand yet. The Golden Hurricane opened the AAC schedule with a 56-54 victory at Central Florida but it was not a good performance. Tulsa opened up a 15 point lead at the half but nearly gave everything back with only 20 second half points. Both teams hit at around 39% but the Golden Hurricane fired off 14 more shots to squeeze out the win. Shaquille Harrison led all scorers with 22 points on 9-13 from the field with James Woodard tossing in 14 points followed by an eight point, eight rebound performance from Rashad Smith.
The Cougars are 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a S.U. loss and 10-4-1 ATS in their last 15 games overall. Houston are 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 vs. American Athletic Conference and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. The Golden Hurricane are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games following a ATS loss and 20-8 ATS in their last 28 home games. Tulsa are 14-6 ATS in their last 20 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400 and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 home games vs. a team with a losing road record. If Houston can avoid periods where nothing goes right I believe double figures in points will be enough but Tulsa is the better squad...
