The Texas-Arlington Mavericks go on the road to take the hardwood with the Troy Trojans on Sunday.
The Texas-Arlington Mavericks are playing better then their season averages with scoring when needed and defense when needed. The Mavericks have ripped off five consecutive victories after outscoring visiting South Alabama 99-87 on Saturday. UTA took a 21 point lead after 20 minutes and then held off a late Jaguars rally. USA burned the nets at 52.7% but the Mavericks were even better with 59.7% shooting with 12 more looks at the basket which added up to eleven more field goals. Johnny Hill led five double digit scorers with 15 points and seven helpers on 6-8 with Lonnie McClanahan and Anthony Walker tossed in 14 points apiece. Drew Charles and Greg Gainey netted 12 and ten points followed three others with eight points each.
If the Troy Trojans are going to be a factor in the Sun Belt they will need a boost in their scoring and defense. In other words both ends of the floor need to get on the same page which hasn't been happening with losses in three of four after Saturday's 91-64 defeat at Louisiana-Lafayette in which the Ragin' Cajuns took control with a 52-33 second half run. UL Lafayette simply didn't miss with at over 57% marksmanship which easily outdistanced the Trojans 44% who compounded the issue with 19 turnovers. Wesley Person Jr. was the Trojans offensive star with a contest best 28 points on 9-15 while Chris Bilbo tossed in ten points. The tandem of John Walton and Musa Abdul-Aleem each scored eight points but ULL had too many offensive options.
The Mavericks are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record. Texas-Arlington are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600 and 13-5-1 ATS in their last 19 road games. The Trojans are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss and are 17-5 ATS in their last 22 games following a SU loss of more than 20 points. Troy are 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 home games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 vs. Sun Belt. I like the way the Mavericks have played thus far and they could be a factor in the conference so I'll back them here...
