James A. Rhodes Arena hosts the MAC opener beween the Akron Zips and the visiting Western Michigan Broncos.
The Western Michigan Broncos are a top four squad in the MAC according to the experts but they have lost some winnable games and haven't really stood out during their non conference schedule. The Broncos have won back to back games after a 70-56 decision over visiting New Hampshire. Both teams sank shots at around 41% with WMU turning 19 Wildcats fouls in to a decisive 21-11 advantage. Connar Tava gave Western Michigan a game high 15 points and six pulls on 4-13 with David Brown tossing in 14 points. Drake LaMont and Tucker Haymond combined for 21 points as the starting five scored all but 13 points.

The Akron Zips are another highly thought of squad in the MAC and have been for a number of years. The Zips have one of the best combinations of scoring and defense in the conference which makes them a threat in a top heavy league. Both ends of the floor have been outstanding in building a three game winning streak that was capped off by a 79-62 rout of Coppin State on Saturday. The Zips led by ten at the break and never let the Eagles offense get going on 37.5% shooting and 21 turnovers. Akron hit at over 41% with five more three pointers doing plenty of damage. Isaiah Johnson led a balanced attack with 13 points while Antino Jackson, Noah Robotham and Kwan Cheatham Jr. added ten points with Cheatham Jr. grabbing seven boards and handing out five assists.
The Broncos are 9-2-1 ATS in their last 12 vs. Mid-American and 12-5-1 ATS in their last 18 games following a S.U. win. Western Michigan are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600. and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600. The Zips are 7-15 ATS in their last 22 games overall and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 home games vs. a team with a winning road record. Akron are 3-10 ATS in their last 13 vs. Mid-American and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. I don't see a ton of difference here but I prefer the Zips defense at home...
