The Marist Red Foxes play host to the Canisius Golden Griffins at the McCann Fieldhouse Thursday.
The Canisius Golden Griffins lost some major offense to graduation and are not close to being the big time soring team they were. Instead of frequently approaching 80 points the Golden Griffins are averaging 63 points and barely keeping their head above water at 7-6. A lack of scoring hurt them in a 63-60 defeat to visiting Manhattan on Monday along with poor half court defense that allowed the Jaspers to sink shots at almost 49% including 9-21 from long range. O the flip side the Golden Griffins connected at 39% and were 3-21 on threes which squandered 13 more looks. Jermaine Crumpton was the go to scorer with 16 points on 7-11 with Josiah Heat netting ten points. The duo of Phil Valenti and Jeremiah Williams netted nine points each as Canisius was balanced but not explosive.
The Maris Red Foxes have suffered some injuries to key contributors which has obviously effected their scoring but even with some players getting healthy the losses have continued to mount. The Red Foxes are slumping with nine consecutive defeats following a 79-67 loss at Saint Peter's on Sunday. A 12 point deficit was trimmed to four late but the rally ran out of steam with 51% marksmanship not enough with the Peacocks firing away at 54% with a 10-20 performance from beyond the arc. Leading scorer Chavaughn Lewis pumped in 20 points but had game high six turnovers before fouling out in 39 minutes. Manny Thomas and KJ Lee each tossed in eleven points with the duo of Phillip Larence and Eric Truog netting nine points each with Truog snagging eight rebounds.
The Golden Griffins are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 road games and 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400. Canisius are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 vs. Metro Atlantic Athletic and 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record. The Red Foxes are 4-13 ATS in their last 17 games following a S.U. loss and 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games overall. Marist are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 vs. Metro Atlantic Athletic and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. The way Marist is struggling they are difficult to back but in my view Canisius as a sizeable road favorite might be even worse...
