The John Paul Jones Arena and the #2 Virginia Cavaliers host the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Thursday.
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets lean on their defense more then most teams in the AAC because they only outscore opponents 66-64 which could work in some conferences but not the power packed Atlantic Coast. The Yellow Jackets have dropped all five conference games after a 70-65 defeat at Pittsburgh on Saturday as a six point road dog. The Jackets managed to control the scoreboard to a certain degree with the Panthers holding a 43.6%-39% shooting edge but 15 turnovers put a damper on the Jackets attack. Robert Sampson paced three double digit scorers with 16 points and eight boards on 6-8 shooting with a 13 point effort coming from Marcus Georges-Hunt. Charles Mitchell followed with a ten point, nine rebound performance but Georgia Tech needed the rest of the lineup to produce a bit more.

The Virginia Cavaliers have been slowly rising through the national rankings with plenty of scoring and defense with extra emphasis on the second ranked defense that allows less then 51 points. That D came through big in Saturday's 66-51 win at Boston College with a 39-27 second half breaking open a three point contest at the break. The Eagles were held to under 40% from the field with UVA countering at 43% with the decisive advantage coming at the stripe where the Cavs hit 18-21. Malcolm Brogdon poured in a game high 20 points and posted five yanks on 5-10 shooting with Anthony Gill providing some muscle with an eleven point, ten rebound performance. Darion Atkins, London Perrantes and Justin Anderson adding eight points each so the Cavaliers had balance and explosiveness.
The Yellow Jackets are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record and 9-1-1 ATS in their last 11 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600. Georgia Tech are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 vs. Atlantic Coast and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600. The Cavaliers are 25-6-2 ATS in their last 33 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record and 19-5-2 ATS in their last 26 vs. Atlantic Coast. Virginia are 28-9-2 ATS in their last 39 games overall and 11-4-1 ATS in their last 16 home games. If Virginia plays as capable they will win big but the spread is too big for my liking...
