The Portland Pilots face a huge challenge in the form of the Saint Mary's Gaels at the Chiles Center.
The Saint Mary's Gaels are in a familiar position in the West Coast as one of the few challengers capable of dethroning Gonzaga. That might be easier said then done however as the two teams met Thursday with the Gaels taking one on the chin in a 68-47 road defeat as a 15 point underdog. The Bulldogs were up six at the half before exploding for 41 points over the final 20 minutes to break up a defensive struggle. In the end the Zags had too much offense with 53% accuracy dwarfing the 36% of SMC. Brad Waldow tossed in 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds and was the only player to break double figures in scoring. Jock Landale and Garrett Jackson contributed eigh and seven points but nobody else scored more then five points.

The Portland Pilots are looking to change the scenery atop the West Coast with their big offense averaging 73 points. Although taking the crown from Gonzaga seems unlikely a top four spot is well within grasp. The Pilots need to go on a tear and build on their 72-69 victory at Pacific before the conference schedule goes too much further. Portland led throughout but could not put the pesky Tigers away with both squads hitting at around 40% with a few more baskets negating Pacific's six extra free throws. Kevin Bailey saved the offense with a game high 21 points on 7-19 from the floor with Thomas van der Mars adding 14 points and eight rebounds before fouling out in 25 minutes. Alec Wintering netted eight points and handed out seven assists while three others scored six points.
The Gaels are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss and 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall. Saint Mary's are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 vs. West Coast and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a S.U. loss. The Pilots are 3-0-2 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of greater than .600. Portland are 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS loss and 4-1-2 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. Tis line looks fishy but if the Gaels don't have a hangover from the Gonzaga bashing I'll back them...
