The Iona Gaels take the hardwood against the Niagara Purple Eagles in a MAAC tilt on Sunday.
The Niagara Purple Eagles have issues at both ends of the floor although they have come up with some competitive efforts although not consistently. The Purple Eagles have been outscored 72-63 and that trend continued in a 69-58 defeat at Monmouth Friday that saddled the team with loss number seven in a row. Niagara had lost to the Hawks at home and were out for revenge befor falling behind by 20 early and fighting for survival. Niagara was done in by poor shooting with Monmouth leading in that area 47%-31.8% with not much different otherwise. Ramone Snowden gave the Purple Eagles with 17 points and six pulls with Dominique Reid adding 12 points and nine rebounds but the best option was Emile Blackman with 18 points on a team best 7-11.

According to the experts the Iona Gaels are the favorite to capture the MAAC and so far the experts might be right with the team tied for first at 7-2. If the Gaels do win the conference a potent offense that averages a whopping 83 points. Issues do arise when the Gaels sometimes 'forget' to play defense although that wasn't a concern in a 78-68 victory wher Iona led by eight at the break and held serve the rest of the way. The Broncs had a slight 43%-40% shooting edge but they also gave the ball away 16 times to give the Gaels 14 more looks at the basket to make Rider pay for their mistakes. Schadric Casmir led all scorers with 24 points with David Laury adding 20 points and 14 rebounds but was just 8-21. Vangelis Bebis and AJ English netted 16 and nine points with English grabbing nine boards and handing out seven assists.
The Purple Eagles are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS loss and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. Niagara are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games overall and 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 neutral site games. The Gaels are 17-39-3 ATS in their last 59 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400 and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games. Iona are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a S.U. win and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS win. Iona defeated the Purple Eagles by one on the road and I'd rather take the points and watch so I don't stress about the Gaels lack of defense and Niagara's lack of everything...
