The UNLV Rebels and the Air Force falcons meet in a Mountain West tilt st the Thomas & Mack Center.
The Air Force Falcons certainly don't have awful numbers as they outscore opponents 67-64 so one would assume their record should not be 9-11. However, the scoring has been down and the defense has struggled in a 2-5 start to the conference schedule with both wins coming against San Jose State. The Falcons need to play the Spartans more often as they waffled SJSU 66-52 on the road Wednesday. AFA was up six at the half and turned back a late rally before going in to cruise control. The Spartans were held to 38.6% shooting while Air Force hit at 42% and pulled away on the strength of a 21-12 margin at the stripe. Matt Mooney was the top offensive threat with 20 points on 7-12 from the field with Hayden Graham scoring 16 points and grabbing six boards. Trevor Lyons and Justin Hammonds added eleven and nine points respectively wit AFA emptying the bench late.
The UNLV Rebels aren't accustomed to a 3-4 start to the conference schedule while sitting in the middle of the pack but the good news is there is plenty of season to get the ship pointed in the right direction. Perhaps the turnaround has begun after a 67-62 victory at Nevada Tuesday gave he team consecutive victories. This looked like a UNLV win from the start with a seven point lead heading to the locker room but the Wolf Pack would not go away despite 35.7% shooting. The Rebels hit at a 49% clip but were only 6-16 from beyond the arc and 13-25 from the stripe to keep the home team competitive. Christian Wood gave the offense 16 points and eleven rebounds with Goodluck Okonoboh adding 13 points, nine boards and five blocks. Rashad Vaughn netted ten points while Jelan Kendrick and Patrick McCaw combined for 17 points with McCaw posting five assists.
The Falcons are 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600 and 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. Air Force are 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 games following a S.U. win and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS win. The Runnin' Rebels are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record and 9-3 ATS in their last 12 Saturday games. UNLV are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 home games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS win. The numbers say Air Force covers this game on the road although UNLV is the better team and I hope the numbers don't lie...
