The Lipscomb Bison bring a 13-16 overall record and 7-7 conference mark in to the conference playoffs. The Bison appeared as if they might be a threat in the Atlantic Sun as they began the league schedule at 4-0 before the wheels fell off. The tem was all about scoring the basketball but opposing teams did much the same and did it better with the team being outscored 75-72. Lipscomb only stepped up in class a few times and didn’t have success when the did so there really isn’t much to go on when comparing this team to the national scene.
The Bison combine a bit of explosiveness with balance to for a dangerous offense with Josh Williams being the featured scorer at 17 points and five rebounds on 49% accuracy. Malcolm Smith combined with Williams to give the lineup more punch at nearly 15 points and another five rebounds on 46% marksmanship. The remainder of the offense was scoring by committee with five players adding between 5-8 points. The key will be Williams and Smith doing their usual scoring and hopefully more with several others upping their production. I personally think the scoring will be fine but I’d be more concerned with getting stops on defense.
The Northern Kentucky Norse are also 13-16 with a 7-7 record in the Atlantic Sun with decent scoring and probably a below average defense as they outscore the opposition 70-69. I guess the best way to describe the Norse is a they would win a few, lose a few while not getting hot or cold. The Norse have played several bigger names but usually were handled pretty well with the one close loss being a two pointer coming at the hands of visiting Toledo.
The offense can be dangerous with a couple of double digit scorers with Tayler Persons leading the way with 13 points on 44% from the floor with over 4.5 rebounds and nearly four helpers making him the team’s most rounded player. Jalen Billups generally gives the bench some punch at 11 points and almost six boards on almost 70% marksmanship. Tyler White and Chad Jackson combined for 18 points with Jackson approaching almost 50% shooting and totaling 5.5 boards. A lot of interesting pieces with some explosiveness and balance that could pose a threat.
The Bison are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. win and are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600. Lipscomb is 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 road games and are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games overall. The Norse are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall. Not much to go on except Northern Kentucky has played their schedule a bit better. I’ll back the Norse but probably just sit on the sidelines…
