The High Point Panthers are one of several teams that push the pace and score the basketball. The Panthers have outscored the opposition 73-68 and hit at over 47% so we are talking about elite qualities. HP finished the season at 22-8 with a 13-5 conference mark to end the season tied for first with Charleston Southern. Notable wins were against Hawaii and William & Mary with a three point loss at Clemson.
There were plenty of able bodied scorers on the roster with one of the top all around players in the conference leading the way. John Bown averaged almost 19 points and grabbed 5.8 rebounds and was deadly efficient at 54.7% from the floor. Devante Wallace and Lorenzo Cugini were almost interchangeable at ten points and a combined ten boards on 43.6% and 52% shooting respectively. Adam Weary gave the Panthers another potential double digit scorer at 9.8 points on 47% from the floor so this offense knew how to shoot and score.
The number six seed Gardner-Webb Bulldogs are known for their offensive talents at 74 points scored but not so much for their defense that gives up 74 points. However, both ends of the floor were on top of their game in a 72-64 defeat o Campbell to win their Big South round one match up. The Bulldogs opened up a 14 point first half lead and held off Fighting Camels rally to advance to the conference quarterfinals. Both teams sank shots in the 42% range with GW winning it with a 22-11 edge at the stripe.
Balanced scoring was the key for the Bulldogs who had four players reach double figures led by Jerome Hill who gave the offense 17 points and a contest high 14 rebounds. Harold McBride and Tyrell Nelson netted 15 points apiece and grabbed nine boards on 6-10 marksmanship. Adonis Burbage followed with ten points and five yanks with Dylan Poston chipping in with another nine points. Gardner-Webb ran a nine man rotation and eight found the scoring column.
The Runnin' Bulldogs are 12-4 ATS in their last 16 games following a S.U. win and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. Gardner-Webb are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. The Panthers are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record and 3-12 ATS in their last 15 games overall. High Point are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following a S.U. loss and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 vs. Big South. This is no slam dunk and could go down to the last minute and I’d consider watching this instead of betting…
