The number six seed Massachusetts Minutemen are not nearly the team they were a season ago but they have been competitive and could be a dangerous foe in the Atlantic Ten playoffs. The Minutemen were competitive but a loser in a 56-53 defeat to visiting Richmond Wednesday for their fourth loss in five contests. This was all about defense in the half court with both teams sinking shots in the 41% range with the Spiders posting six more looks and two more baskets thanks to 15 UMass turnovers. Cady Lalanne paced three double digit scorers with 14 points and 12 rebounds on 6-6 shooting with Donte Clark tossing in 12 points. Maxie Esho was next in line with ten points and eight pulls with the rest of the team scoring 17 points.
The George Washington Colonials have been in a bit of a funk the past several weeks as losers in seven of ten. The Colonials appeared to be a lock for a 20 win season but are 19-11 after routing George Mason 67-51 on Wednesday as a three point road favorite. A 39-18 second half explosion erased a three point deficit with the Patriots held to 32% shooting while GM connected at almost 47% with an 18-6 advantage at the stripe for an easy win. Patrico Garino gave the offense 15 points and a team high nine rebounds on 6-8 from the floor while Kevin Larsen and Paul Jorgensen tossed in eleven points apiece. Kethan Savage chipped in with nine points with three others contributing between 6-7 points.
The Minutemen are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games following a S.U. loss. UMassare 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. The Colonials are 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 home games vs. a team with a losing road record and 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 games following a ATS win. George Washington are 8-20 ATS in their last 28 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record and 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 home games. I wouldn’t feel great backing either the way they are playing but I will give the points a shot…
