The UC Irvine Anteaters head in to the final game of the regular season in second place in the Big West with no chance of stealing first. The Anteaters can drop into a second place tie with Santa Barbara with a loss so the game has meaning. UCI has won four of five after downing Cal State Fullerton 68-62 as a 14 point favorite. The Anteaters won the shooting battle 43%-38% but the Titans made four more shots thanks to 16 more attempts. The decisive advantage belonged to Irvine who hit 13 more free throws. The Anteaters received 15 points and six pulls from Luke Johnson despite 2-9 from the field while Mamadou Ndiaye added 12 points and a team high eight rebounds. Will Davis II and Travis Sousa netted nine points apiece and ten boards while Alex Young scored eight.
The UC Davis Aggies are regular season champions of the Big West because they have the best combination of scoring and defense. On Thursday the Aggies received an unexpected battle from UC Riverside before prevailing61-59 with the defense rising to the occasion. The Highlanders were limited to under 40% accuracy while Davis struggled to an uncharacteristic 37%. Even 15 more shots by the Highlanders was enough with the Aggies dominating the foul line 24-5. Corey Hawkins gave the offense a huge boost with a game high 21 points and six pulls on 5-12 shooting with Josh Fox adding 14 points and six boards on 10-14 from the charity stripe. Josh Ritchart tossed in nine points and snared a team high eight rebounds to round out the top contributors.
