The Hampton Pirates were a middle of the row team in MEAC action at 8-8 but struggled overall with a 12-17 record. The Pirates were outscored 68-65 and had some shooting issues with team sinking shots at around 40% but never got both ends of the floor on the same page consistently. The Pirates did not have success against higher ranked teams although a win over Northern Arizona looks pretty goo right now.
For Hampton to have success in the postseason a boost in both scoring and defense would obviously help. The offense has potential with three double digit scorers and a few others that have the ability to crack ten points on any given day. Dwight Meikle is the centerpiece of the attack with 13 points and 7.5 rebounds on over 51% accuracy with Reginald Johnson and Quinton Chievous adding eleven and ten points respectively. The Pirates need better then 40% shooting and will be tough if that comes about.
The Morgan State Bears were often overlooked and their 7-23 record and 5-11 in the conference. The problems are at both ends of the floor and the numbers are severe with 61points scored on 35% marksmanship with 70 points allowed on over 47% which are tough numbers to overcome individually and impossible when combined. The signature win is versus UC Irvine which is a big upset to me.
Cedric Blossom is the best player on the floor at 14 points and seven rebounds on over 42% shooting with Blake Bozeman the only other double digit scorer at 12 points but he threw up a lot of shots on less then 35% from the floor. Nobody else scored more then five points so the rest of the offense will be score by committee or perhaps a few guys step up but in reality the Bears need both.
The Bears are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 Monday games while going 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Pirates are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall and are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games following a S.U. loss while going 0-4 ATS in their last 4 neutral site games. The Pirates seem to be the right side but that doesn’t mean one thing with so many conflicting numbers…
