USA TODAY Sports
The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats have had their share of problems at 11-20 overall but at 7-9 in the MEAC I would say they were a bit more competitive then their record suggests. The Wildcats generally tried to control the scoreboard and were outscored 62-59 with inconsistency at both ends of the floor being the concern in defeats. The team didn’t play a tough non conference schedule but a seven point loss to North Florida was a great effort.
For a team that needs scoring the unknown injury status of Brandon Stewart is a concern. Stewart averaged 14 points and five boards in 18 games but was just a 34% shooter. Ricky Johnson is the only other double digit scorer at 12.5 points but shot the ball at less then 35%. Quentin Brewer is an interesting option at nine points with a team high seven rebounds on 50% accuracy. The bottom line for me is a team that plays in the half court can’t be volume shooters.
The Coppin State Eagles were not much of a factor in the MEAC at 6-10 with an overall record of 7-22 although they were dangerous with their ability to score at 73 points. They were not nearly as dangerous at the defensive end where opponents tagged them for a whopping 83 points on over 48% shooting. CSU did play one of the better non conference schedules of the conference with a three point loss to Eastern Kentucky catching my eye.
The Eagles feature three double digit scorers with Sterling Smith heading this group with 14 points and five boards on 47% from the floor. Taariq Cephas and Arnold Fripp average around 12 points each and both are better then 40% marksman. Christian Kassee adds almost ten points to the mix to give the starting lineup plenty of punch but the obvious question is can the opposing team be held below 70 points.
The Eagles are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing more than 90 points in their previous game and 4-9 ATS in their last 13 neutral site games. Coppin State are 7-16 ATS in their last 23 games overall and 3-9 ATS in their last 12 vs. Mid-Eastern Athletic. The Wildcats are 11-3-1 ATS in their last 15 vs. Mid-Eastern Athletic and 7-2-2 ATS in their last 11 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400. Bethune-Cookman are 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 games following a S.U. win and 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record. No line because of the status of Brandon Stewart so please check back…
