Numbers tell the story of the Alcorn State Braves season as a 5-25 record and 4-14 conference mark tells of struggles in most areas. For the Braves it’s the usual suspects as in scoring and defense as opponents outscore them 74-64 with the offense hitting shots at less then 39% and the opposition connecting at over 46%. Having said that the Braves don’t have a big win but have played several close games in the SWAC.
In the scope of things the Braves do score the basketball although not as well as the opposition. The issue is that this team struggles with their shot and are ‘volume’ shooters. LeAntwan Luckett and Marquis Vance average 16 and 13 points but both are 37% marksman. Alcorn State has numerous secondary scorers and more then a few will need to step up if the team hopes to do something in the playoffs.
The Grambling State Tigers basketball program has really struggled the past several years and 2014-15 was no different with a 2-26 record and an 0-18 mark in conference action. The Tigers average 52 points on 36% shooting while allowing 73 points on 46.7% and these numbers obviously don’t work together. Both wins have come against sub division schools so there are no eye opening performances.
Grambling has played some close contests so what do they need to do to pull a surprise or two? It will probably involve a poor shooting night from their opponent combined with solid defense. The offense will have to make some shots as well with A’Torri Shine needing to score more then his 13 points. Mark Gray will give Shine some help at 10.5 points and a team high six rebounds but this pair account for almost half of the Tigers points and won’t be able to carry the team far without help.
The Tigers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record and 7-2 ATS in their last 9 vs. Southwestern Athletic while going 5-2 ATS in their last 7 neutral site games. The Braves are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games overall. These teams are a combined 7-51 so my advice is to put it on the radio with the volume down…
