The Cal Poly Mustangs came from nowhere to win the Big West playoffs a year ago and grab the automatic berth and get the opportunity for another big run. The Mustangs are a better team then they were a year ago despite their 13-15 record and 6-10 mark in the conference. Putting the ball in the basket is still an issue at 61 points on 39% shooting with opponents held to less then 60 points allowed thanks to the sow and deliberate attack of CP.
Cal Poly ended the regular season with four consecutive defeats where the team did not break 56 points so scoring has to be the number one concern. Brian Bennett is the top gun with eleven points and six boards on nearly 50% from the floor. Davis Nwaba and Reece Morgan add 12 and ten points respectively to give the offense three double digit scoring threats but secondary production is a worry with most of the team connecting at well below 40%.
I have a voice in me that says watch out for the Santa Barbara Gauchos and that voice looked to be wrong early on before UCSB ripped off wins in nine of ten to end the regular season that upped their record to 18-9 and 11-5 in the conference. The Gauchos outscore the opposition 68-63 but have generally played better then these numbers during the current hot streak.
Santa Barbara doesn’t need to change what is working right now as they score when needed and get stops when needed and when both ends of the floor are clicking they can win the Big West. Alan Williams leads four double digit scorers with 17 points and 12 rebounds with Michael Bryson adding another 14 points with both connecting at 46%. John Green and Gabe Vincent combine for 21 points so if the back ups and role players do just a little then the Gauchos are in good shape.
The Mustangs are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 neutral site games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Thursday games. Cal Poly are 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a S.U. loss and 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Gauchos are 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record and 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. UCSB are 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. Big West and 13-6 ATS in their last 19 neutral site games. Even though it’s tough to beat a team three times the Gauchos have revenge on their mind from last year when Cal Poly knocked them from the playoffs…
