The UC Irvine Anteaters were in the running for the conference crown before a 5-4 finish to the season ended those hopes. The Anteaters were 18-12 overall and 11-5 in the conference with both the ability to score and defend. UCR has outscored opponents 68-63 with 46% shooting and less then 40% allowed. The best win was against Green Bay and a good loss was a three pointer at Saint Mary’s.
UC Irvine was the very definition of balance with just a single double digit scorer in Will Davis II scoring almost 13 points and 6.5 rebounds on 53% marksmanship. Luke Nelson and Alex Young were close to DD scorers at almost ten points apiece although four players topped the ten point mark on many an occasion. If the Anteaters defend the points will definitely come.
The UC Riverside Highlanders were seemingly on the verge of a winning season before settling for a 14-16 record and a 7-9 conference mark. The Highlanders average and allow 66 points and appeared to be heading for a spot in the top for with three straight wins before a three game slide to end the year robbed the team of a winning record and a higher seed.
Taylor Johns was the go to scorer at 16 points and a team leading eight rebounds on 47% from the floor. Jaylen Bland joined him in the double digit scoring column at 15.5 points and nearly five boards but sometimes struggled with his shot at less then 39%. The remainder of the offense was a mix of good shooting and poor shooting which is why the team sank shots at around 42%.
The Highlanders are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. loss and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. Riverside are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 vs. Big West. The Anteaters are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss and 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 Thursday games. UC Irvine are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 neutral site games and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record. The Anteaters have been a cover machine but they will barely cover if my numbers are right…
