The WAC has an ever changing look and one of the newcomers is the Chicago State Cougars. The Cougars have obvious need for improvement as they entered the world of big time basketball with an 8-23 record and 4-10 conference mark. The Cougars tried to slow things down but were outscored 67-58 with 38% team shooting and not as successful as they needed to be.
The Cougars biggest worry in the postseason is where will the points come from especially with just one double digit scorer. Clarke Rosenberg averages almost 13 points and snags four boards on 40% shooting but the rest of the offense is a mix of 2-8 point scorers with many connecting at well below 40%. My gut says Chicago State will put a mix of players on the floor and hope to find a few hot hands to lean on.
The Seattle Redhawks don’t have awful numbers despite playing .500 basketball in a conference still in search of an Identity. The Redhawks were 14-14 overall and 7-7 in league action as they employed a controlled half court attack with some degree of success. Seattle outscored the opposition 63-62 behind decent 44% shooting and 40% given up but generally struggled if opponents approached 70 points.
The Redhawks received solid production from the top of the lineup with leading scorer Isah Umpig pumping in almost 17 points on 42% accuracy. Jarell Flora was the only other player to average double figures at 14 points on 43%. William Powell and Jack Crook combined for 14 points 12 rebounds with both sinking around half their looks but they didn’t shoot a lot. The offense is score by committee after the top four and could certainly use another DD contributor.
The Under is 4-0-1 in Cougars last 5 overall and is 5-2-1 in Cougars last 8 games following a S.U. loss while the over is 5-2 in Cougars last 7 neutral site games. The Under is 7-1 in Redhawks last 8 games following a S.U. loss and is 7-1 in Redhawks last 8 vs. Western Athletic while going 4-1 in Redhawks last 5 Thursday games and 7-2 in Redhawks last 9 overall. There really aren’t many trends to look at so I think (I said think) is to lay the small chalk with Seattle…
