The Southern Methodist Mustangs were one of the best teams that didn’t receive an NCAA invitation because they were eliminated from the conference tournament. The Mustangs were out to make sure history did not repeat itself and it was goal accomplished with a 15-3 record in the AAC securing the regular season title. SMU was 24-6 overall and outscored opponents 70-59 with the ability to win any way.
The Mustangs claim to fame is their stifling defense but their scoring was very strong as well and perhaps under rated behind double digit scorers with some dangerous secondary support. Nic Moore leads the attack with 14 points on 44% marksmanship with Yanick Moreira adding eleven points and more then six boards on 49% shooting. Markus Kennedy is a key contributor with another eleven points and 6+ rebounds on 56% in 20 contests.
The East Carolina Pirates didn’t have the season they wanted in their first year in the AAC so the next best thing is to win the conference postseason. The Pirates are heading in the right direction after an 81-80 victory against Central Florida in their playoff opener. The Pirates squandered an eight point first half lead with the Knights hanging tough on 49% shooting while hitting at 45.6% themselves with three more free throws making the difference.
East Carolina received a contest high 19 points and five assists from BJ Tyson on 7-13 from the field followed by Marshall Guillmette with 18 points and six pulls on 7-12 from the floor before fouling out in 27 minutes. Caleb White and Michel-Ofik Nzege tossed in 13 points apiece on combined 10-17 accuracy while Paris Roberts Campbell chipped in with eleven points.
The Pirates are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games following a S.U. win and1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. ECU are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 vs. American Athletic Conference and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games. The Mustangs are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS loss and 4-1-2 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record. SMU are 7-3-2 ATS in their last 12 games following a S.U. win and 13-6-3 ATS in their last 22 games overall. I think you either go with the potential of SMU or stay away from the big number…
