The Cincinnati Bearcats lost enough talent to graduation to make them a dark horse in the AAC as opposed to a favorite. However the Bearcats have been better then expected behind a suffocating defense that has forged a 22-9 record with a very strong 13-5 conference mark. Cinci has outscored opponents 63-55 with less then 40% shooting allowed.
The Bearcats have a full head of steam heading in to the postseason with five consecutive victories under their belt. Even though this a team that will go only as far as their defense will take them they still need points to win. Octavius Ellis is the lone double digit scorer at ten points and a team high seven rebounds on 58% but balance defines this team with seven players averaging between 4-9 points which has usually been more then enough.
The Connecticut Huskies are not nearly the team they were last season which is a no brainer after winning the National Championship. The obvious question is can the Huskies even make the Field of 64 and have the opportunity to defend their title. The answer was yes for one night after UConn knocked off South Florida 69-43 in the conference opener. This was never in doubt with the Bulls held to 31% shooting with UConn burning the nets at over 54%.
Connecticut received a contest high 20 points on 6-8 from the floor which included four makes from beyond the arc. Rodney Purvis and Ryan Boatright added 13 and 12 points respectively with a combined 9-20 shooting and six long balls followed by a nine point, five yank and five block performance from Amida Brimah with Omar Calhoun chipping in with another nine points.
The Huskies are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games following a ATS win and 38-17 ATS in their last 55 neutral site games. UConn are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 vs. American Athletic Conference and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games after allowing less than 50 points in their previous game. The Bearcats are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a S.U. win and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS win. Cincinnati are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 vs. American Athletic Conference. This is a tough one and might be better to watch or at least it is for me…
